Special Steamboat snow update!
It is happening again in Steamboat Springs...the snow! The past two weeks in Steamboat has been magical. Each morning I have woken up with the same sense of wonder, thinking that I have come to live in a snow globe. Not a cheap plastic one on the shelf of some gift shop, but a grand glass sphere that encompasses our entire little town and world class ski mountain. The snow is not so much falling as it is hovering, swirling, and floating - filling the air, refracting the light, and eventually settling on the ground.
While skiing before Christmas it was easy to say that the season was starting to take shape. The snow was falling consistently, but our daily totals were smaller than desired; two inches here, 4 inches there, an occasional 6 or 8 inch day. We were still skiing through some bushes and thicket, and had to be very careful of stumps and fallen timber in the trees. Well, we had a Christmas storm that changed all that.
On Christmas morning Steamboat reported that 11 new inches had fallen over night, but it did not end there…it was still snowing. By 1:00 p.m. the total had grown to 19", and the snow continued to come. Those bushes are disappearing quickly. The skiing was so good on Christmas Day that people will remember it for years to come.
"Hey, do you recall Christmas Day 2007."
"Ya, I sure do...that was the Christmas where wei didn't open the presents under the tree until late in the afternoon. We were too busy bursting through the gift Santa had dropped on our Mountain."
While the sun shines this morning, the forecast calls for more snow tonight, and the 10 day has snow in 6 of them.
If you are planning a ski trip for this season, make it Steamboat. You will not regret it…nobody ever does.
